Day 85. Buenos Aires.

Katherine arrived today, Saturday, and we immediately headed off to the park which was close to our apartment, Plaza Intendente Alvear (Alvear served as Argentina's president from 1922 to 1928). There was a Saturday market set up throughout the park, so we walked around checking out the silver, leather goods, etc. Then we headed to the other side of the park to eat at a famous cafe, La Biela, which has existed for almost 100 years....

It's current name, which refers to the connecting rod of a car's engine, was adopted in the 50's, when it was a hangout for famous race car drivers. Outside the restaurant is a ficus tree that was planted by monks over 200 years ago...

After eating lunch we had planned to do a walking tour of neighborhoods of Recoleta and Palermo, but for the first time, the tour guide did not show up!! Darn! Didn't even think to have a backup plan, as that had never happened on this entire trip. So....we walked over to the Cementario de Recoleta, where the ornate mausoleums and crypts of the rich and famous line the paved walkways....

...including the resting place of Eva Peron....

....more about her later. And more about the cemetery later.

We had noticed a Jazz club just a couple of doors down from us, so we took in a dinner and a show there. They don't start dinner here until 9:00pm, which is an adjustment for us!!

Tomorrow, we will head to the bohemian neighborhood of San Telmo!

  1. Have a wonderful time in Buenos Aires. Hi to Katherine. Hope to hear more about the apt you're staying in - sounded like it must be pretty neat. Hope your tour guide shows up.
